Teacher Professional Growth Plan

GOAL 1: Expand my knowledge about class management in the Gymnasium.

Action Plan:

1. Attend ATA workshops on classroom management.

Timeline: September

Indicators of Success:

  • Apply strategies learnt in the session to my teaching practice. Session is September 12th.

  • Adapt and change strategies to make them my own and fit the students that I teach.

  • Students respond positively to strategies I try.

2. Attend ATA workshop on dealing with parents involved in the classroom

Timeline: October

Indicators of Success:

  • Apply strategies learnt in the session to my teaching practice. Session is October 31st.

  • Adapt and change strategies to make them my own and fit the students that I teach.

  • Have positive relationships with parents of the students I teach.

3. Search out new strategies from other PE teachers at the school.

Timeline: September-December

Indicators of Success:

  • Asking Mandy, Sandra and Erin for strategies they have used in their PE classes.

  • Trying out new strategies for management during my PE lessons.

  • Changing strategies to make them my own and so that they apply directly to the type of students in each class.

  • Students respond positively to the strategies I try.

GOAL 2: Increase use of technology in PE class.

Action Plan:

1. Use iPads for skill assessment in Volleyball and Basketball.

Timeline: September-December

Indicators of Success:

  • Students are able to record the partners’ skill test in Volleyball and Basketball.

  • Students are able to complete their skill assessment whenever they feel they are ready as the iPad will be available to them at any time during their class. If for some reason students want to re-do their assessment, they simply have to erase their last video and re-shoot it.

  • I am able to take home the iPads and assess from home. This frees up time during class to help out students who need my attention.

2. Have students use iPads to create their dance/skipping final project. Use them for recording their performance and for the music.

Timeline: October-November

Indicators of Success:

  • Students use school iPads to create their performance. They may get ideas from online sources as they see fit. The same song will be used for all groups and guidelines will be given to follow.

  • Students will record their final performance that I will assess by watching the video.

  • Students MAY also have an opportunity to perform at a school assembly.

3. Use Phys. Ed. iPad to take attendance and submit instantly online, to make sure it is done every day.

Timeline: September-December

Indicators of Success:

  • Attendance is submitted in the first 10 minutes of class.

  • No days are missed and regular attendance is complete from the gym.

4. Use pedometers during the Basketball unit during tournament play by using the Sport Ed. Model to increase participation through the unit.

Timeline: November- December

Indicators of Success:

  • Students increase awareness of their fitness level. The Sport Ed model does not allow for students to be just hanging out while other students are active. By having students wear pedometers they track their steps and can gain team points by simply being active the entire class.

  • Students understand heart rate and what a healthy range is for their age level.

GOAL 3: Maintain my positive attitude through practicum by keeping a reduced stress level and keeping to a fitness routine.

Action Plan:

1. Purchase a gym pass to the University.

Timeline: September- December

Indicators of Success:

  • At least 3 workouts are completed each week on my own time.

  • Workouts are a way to clear my mind and reduce stress.

2. At least 1 “me” night per week.

Timeline: September-December

Indicators of success:

  • Any night, Sunday-Saturday, will be allotted for me to do something I enjoy to allow my brain to turn off and recharge.

  • I feel refreshed the next morning and can give more to my students.

3. Get enough sleep each night.

Timeline: September-December

Indicators of Success:

  • At least 6 hours of sleep each night- including weekends.

  • I feel refreshed the next morning and can give more to my students.

TPGP Reflection:

PS3 was a whirlwind of months for me. While I would not trade any experience, there is one regret that I do have, I failed to reach much of my third goal. In these next couple paragraphs I will focus in on each goal and reflect on how I achieved or failed to meet them.

Goal #1- Expand my knowledge about classroom management in the gymnasium- ACHIEVED!

This goal was a large focus of mine, mainly because I had so many different personalities in all 4 of my PE classes that no 1 strategy would work with all of them. I did attend an ATA workshop seminar series that was specific to beginning teachers. There were many take aways from them in regards to this goal however, the main lesson I learned and applied to my teaching in PS3 was that exact thing- not all classes can be treated the same. Strategies that are successful in 1 class may not necessarily work in another. I had to change my managemenst skills based on the class that was in the gym. For example, one PE class responded really well when I corrected their behaviour by saying, "The longer this explanation takes for me to get through, the less time you will have to play the game." they usually got back into check pretty quick. The classes that did not respond well to that form of crrection had strikes goven out to them. Like in Baseball, students were allowed 3 strikes in 1 class until the were "out" and for the remainder of the class their job was to clean the black shoe marks off of the floor. Luckily, I never had to give out more than 2 strikes in a PE class- the strikes worked well for other classes.

While I did seek out opinions and strategies from the other PE teachers in the school, I will admit that I could have given this a little more focus. Mandy was my "go-to" when I had issues with behviour in PE class and I received many good strategies from her to try for next time. I regret not going to Sandra and Erin more for class management strategies, whenever we talked the conversation turned more to the activites we were doing in PE class, not HOW to get students to do them.

Goal #2- Increase the use of technology in PE class- ACHIEVED!

While I would have loved to incorporate it more, I think I successfully achieved this goal. The main way technology creeped into PE class was through iPads. I used iPads for": recording volleyball skills assessment, music for the dance/skipping and cooperative games unit and the students used iPads to record their partners in the basketball skills assessment. I tried using the iPads for attendance submission each class but I felt the app really slowed me down and that took away from active time for the students, I disregarded that idea after a couple of attempts.

Something that I wish I would have done to use more technology in PE was using pedometers to track steps and incorporate that into the Sport Ed. model strategy. I unfortunately was not organized enough in the last couple weeks to book the pedometers from the University Curriculum Lab, so they were not available. I looked into buying a class set of my own however, it was not in the funds for me at the time. It is still a goal of mine to attempt to organize a unit using the Sport Ed. model, hopefully I will get that chance in the near future.

Goal #3- Maintain my positive attitude throughout practicum by keeping a reduced stress level and keeping to a fitness routine- NOT ACHIEVED!

While 2/3 of these goals were achieved, I am disappointed with myself for not sticking to this goal with more diligence. I will honestly say that there was not a point during the practicum when I felt stressed, I managed my stress by staying well organized and getting enough sleep. I always showed up to school with a positive attitude and was more than happy to start my day. Where I fell short was in keeping up with my fitness goals. I knew this was going to be a struggle for me because the commute and early mornings were going to add up and my energy was going to be low by the time I returned back to Lethbridge each evening. This is the main reason why I made the goal in the first place- I did not hold myself accountable. I wish I was not so hard on myself in these regards, I did what I could with the energy and time that I had however, I feel I could have done more.

With this all being said, I am still proud of what I have accomplished in the past 4 months. It was been quite an adventure- one that I would not change for the world.

Professional Inquiry Project

The PIP was quite a demanding assignment. For this, I chose to answer the question:

"How can we develop Numeracy skills through project-based learning?"

To answer this question, I created a website that contained every document that I used to teach Numeracy 6 and 7. Every challenge plan, every word document that I created, anything that I used and that steps I took in teacing the class are on this website. The link to this website is:

                            http://ehnatiuk.wix.com/numeracyresources

For further information about my PIP project, please visit the website. It is very informative with lots of great resources on it. If there are any other questions regarding it, please feel free to e-mail me.

Although the PIP was an exhausting project, I am super glad that I now have a resource base to refer to if I ever lose any documents that I have. Also, I know that this website will be very valuable to any teachers (DAF and everywhere) who are in need of project-based Numeracy/Math assignment. I very much enjoyed teaching Numeracy because as much as it was a challenge to create with an prepare the projects, it was very rewarding seeing students collaborate and learn authentic skills that they may not have had the chance to do in a more traditional teaching strategy.
